Sandy's Devotional

Aug 06, 2019 • By Sandy Shoshani

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Mathew 5:13-16)

That’s us! We are the salt of the earth! Salt was an all-important mineral in the time of Jesus. There were no fridges, and no way of preserving food except with salt. Meat and fish and other foods were packed in salt in order to keep their freshness and to prevent decay. Without the salt, and in the heat of a Middle Eastern summer, meat would have perished within hours. Jesus is saying that just as salt, our lives are effective for preventing decay in the earth that we live in today.
We are also the light of the world! In Philippians 2 we have instructions of what to do so that we may shine as lights in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation. Our lives are able to powerfully affect the world we live in, through prayer, speaking the truth, by acts of kindness and works of righteousness, and many other ways. May we, through the power of God, maintain our saltiness, and our brightness, that we may be effective as children of a different kingdom … the Kingdom of God. (Judy Czapski, prayer partner)
