DEVOTIONAL

The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”  “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites.”  The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”  But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.” The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.” Joshua 17:14-18

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  Hebrews 12:1-3

The tribe of Joseph said themselves, “The Lord has blessed us abundantly.” Yet, they grumbled that His blessings were not enough. They demanded more rather than being thankful. They wanted the easy way out, but God wanted them to pursue their FULL inheritance in His mercy:  to ‘clear the forests’ and ‘drive out’ the enemy. We have been shown abundant grace by our Lord – forgiveness, redemption, and adoption as His children, but we, like the people of Israel, complain and think that God has cheated us when we face difficulties or trials. We murmur like they did in the wilderness. Our race is not a sprint - it’s a marathon and we want to finish well.   To do so, we need to keep focused, with our eyes on Him, our Yeshua (Savior), so that we will take hold of the whole inheritance.  He’s given us all that we need in abundance – But we need to choose to claim the fullness of His blessings.
